RICHMOND, Va. — Today, the Virginia Senate Finance and Appropriations and House Appropriations Committees each approved their respective budget proposals for the 2024-2026 biennium. Executive Director of Freedom Virginia Rhena Hicks released the following statement:
“We are glad to see that Governor Youngkin’s backwards, regressive budget proposal on income and sales taxes is now off the table. Governor Youngkin’s budget would have increased taxes on everyday Virginians, while handing a massive tax break to the ultra-wealthy and leaving our public schools underfunded. The House and Senate money committees have prioritized what hard-working Virginians want: more funding for schools, affordable healthcare, and a fair tax system that lets you keep more of what you earn. We are especially pleased to see the adoption of the Prescription Drug Affordability Board in both the House and Senate budgets, and to see the Senate advance a paid family and medical leave program. We urge conferees to consider additional avenues to invest in everyday Virginians and make our tax code more balanced for the middle class, including a Fair Share tax, a child tax credit and an increase in the refundable earned income tax credit. We look forward to working with conferees for the rest of the session to build an economy that works for all Virginians.”
