Freedom Virginia 2023 Legislative Session Update (February 8)

Welcome to Freedom Virginia’s Legislative Update! Today marks four full weeks of session completed and it’s been a whirlwind! Read on to hear more about how we’ve been advocating to make Virginia more affordable for all!

The Prescription Drug Affordability Board Passed out of the Senate

Members of the General Assembly and Advocates at our beginning of session press conference supporting the Prescription Drug Affordability Board

We are thrilled to announce that the Prescription Drug Affordability Board, SB 957, passed with strong bipartisan support in the Senate! The next step is for the bill to head to the house! We are so proud to stand alongside members of the general assembly in this fight, including Senator Creigh Deeds who gave the following quote.

“Our constituents sent us to Richmond to fight for them and I was proud to stand with my colleagues to do just that today,” said Senator Creigh Deeds. “This monumental piece of legislation will mean major cost savings for Virginians on the life-saving medicines that they need.”

The Prescription Drug Affordability Board would empower Virginia to set reasonable rates to protect consumers from unfair and out-of-control prices of medicines they rely on. Our organizer Grace joined other members of the Energy Burden coalition to advocate for the The Affordable Energy Act which will protect families from price-gouging by big utility companies. Grace also held an information session where she spoke to community members about the importance of this legislation! We were so happy to see this legislation pass the Senate unanimously (40-0) and move to the house.

Black History and Health Care event coming up

Our southwestern Virginia organizer Eddie will be hosting a Black History Celebration on February 25 at 4pm.  Speakers will include Shmura Glenn, and a representative from the Harrison Museum.  We will honor Burrell Memorial Hospital, Henrietta Lacks, Dr. Finn Victor, Miram Smith, RN, Dr. Walter Claytor and others.
