With Nearly 300,000 Virginians’ Paychecks at Risk, GOP State Legislative Candidates Remain Silent on Their Party’s Shutdown Brinkmanship

RICHMOND, Va. — Freedom Virginia today issued the following statement calling out Republican state legislative candidates for their silence and inaction on their party’s willingness to jeopardize the paychecks of nearly 300,000 Virginians, including more than 140,000 civilian federal workers and more than 150,000 members of the military:

“Nearly 300,000 hardworking Virginians who have chosen careers in service to this country are at risk of losing their paychecks thanks to the extremism of today’s MAGA Republicans,” said Freedom Virginia Executive Director Rhena Hicks. “We’ve seen Democratic elected officials and candidates stand up against a possible government shutdown that would harm Virginia families’ economic stability. Yet, Republican candidates have refused to stand up in support of keeping the government open. We call on Republican candidates to show up for hardworking Virginians and our economy and demand that their MAGA colleagues in Congress keep the government open. These tactics are dangerous for our nation and especially for Virginia, and represent the kind of harmful consequences we would see if Republicans take control of state government in the November elections.”
