NEW TOOL: Freedom Virginia Launches New Digital Tool to Highlight Big Pharma’s Big Lobbying Increase

New Web Feature Helps Virginians Learn How Big Pharma is Keeping Medicine Expensive

RICHMOND, Va. — This week, Freedom Virginia debuted a new interactive tool on its website to display data on pharmaceutical companies’ increased lobbying spending between 2023 and 2024. The new feature comes after the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that pharmaceutical companies doubled their lobbying investment in Virginia from 2023-2024 to combat the passage of Prescription Drug Affordability Board legislation to lower the cost of medicine for hardworking Virginians.

Delegate Karrie Delaney (D-Fairfax) patroned bipartisan legislation, HB1724, again this year to establish a Prescription Drug Affordability Board. The bill built on momentum from the 2024 session and passed both chambers of the General Assembly with growing bipartisan support again this year. The bill is now headed to Governor Youngkin’s desk; he has until March 24 to take action.

Freedom Virginia co-Executive Director Rhena Hicks released the following statement:

“This new tool will help Virginians learn how much Big Pharma is spending to stop crucial legislation that will save us all money on our medicine. It’s clear to see that pharmaceutical companies prioritize their profits over patients. Now more than ever, the governor needs to take action to lower the cost of prescription drugs. As costs continue to skyrocket across the economy, pharmaceutical companies are sparing no expense to keep medicine expensive. With broken promises of lower costs at the federal level, we need state leaders to support measures like a Prescription Drug Affordability Board and fight for a fair and affordable economy for Virginians.”
