Senate Passes Bill to Expand Access to Paid Leave for Hardworking Virginians

Bill Will Protect Health Care Coverage for 3.4 Million Workers When They Need to Take Necessary Leave

RICHMOND, Va. — Today SB1122, patroned by Senator Jennifer Boysko (D-Fairfax), passed the Virginia Senate by a 21 to 18 vote. The bill will expand access to Paid Family and Medical Leave, ensuring that the 3.4 million Virginia workers without access to paid leave can take up to 12 weeks when experiencing events like a new baby, serious illness or injury. The paid leave in Boysko’s bill includes 80% wage replacement and protection of health care coverage. On average, a typical Virginia worker taking four weeks of unpaid leave will lose $3,700 in income.

This crucial legislation reaffirms our commitment to family values by protecting hardworking Virginians and ensuring they can take paid leave when they need it. Across the country, momentum has been growing for Paid Family and Medical Leave. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia guarantee access to Paid Family and Medical Leave, including Minnesota and Maine, which passed legislation in 2023. Virginia has the opportunity to continue the momentum with this legislation that expands access to paid leave, ensuring Virginians can get ahead.

Companion legislation, HB2531, patroned by Delegate Briana Sewell (D-Prince William), will be considered by the House Appropriations Committee in the coming days.
