To Honor Workers, Lower Their Cost of Living

RICHMOND, Va. – Freedom Virginia Co-Executive Directors Rhena Hicks and Ryan O’Toole today issued the following statement in honor of Labor Day:

“As we celebrate the labor movement’s hard-fought wins for workers’ rights, we renew our call for elected leaders to help us build an economy in which workers can afford to live. That means taking on Big Pharma so that people don’t have to choose between their food and their medicine. It means cracking down on price-gouging and banning surprise junk fees. It means expanding the housing supply so that hardworking families can actually attain the dream of owning a home. It means asking corporations and the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share and lowering the tax burden on working people. And it means passing paid family and medical leave so that workers can afford to welcome a new baby or care for a loved one who falls seriously ill.

“Raising wages and lowering the cost of living do not have to be in conflict with each other if we stand up to corporate greed. To truly honor the American worker, we must ensure that America is a place where workers can do more than just get by. They deserve to get ahead.”
