The Affordable Medicine Act Moves Forward in the House and Senate

Landmark Legislation to Lower the Cost of Medicine Passes with Bipartisan Support

RICHMOND, Va. — The Affordable Medicine Act will move forward in both chambers of the General Assembly. Yesterday, SB 271, patroned by Senator Creigh Deeds (D-Charlottesville), passed the Commerce and Labor committee with a bipartisan 10-4-1 vote. Today, HB 483, patroned by Delegate Karrie Delaney (D-Fairfax), passed Labor and Commerce Subcommittee One with a 5-4 vote.

Freedom Virginia co-Executive Director Rhena Hicks released the following statement:

“We’re pleased to see both bills move forward in the General Assembly, and we are especially excited about the continued bipartisan support for this legislation. Virginians need relief from high prescription drug costs and we’re thankful to each committee member who voted to advance the Affordable Medicine Act. We’re disheartened by the no votes on this legislation. Hardworking families deserve leaders who will fight to lower their health care costs and not cower to pharmaceutical companies who will continue to price gouge them out of affording their life saving and sustaining medication. It is beyond time to pass this legislation, and we look forward to seeing the Affordable Medicine Act progress through the General Assembly.”
