RICHMOND, Va. — Today, Governor Spanberger vetoed SB 756, legislation that would have allowed Fairfax County to consider a referendum legalizing a casino in Tysons Corner.
Freedom Virginia has released multiple rounds of public polling on the proposed casino, including polling in October 2025 that showed 75% of Fairfax County residents opposed to a casino; polling in February that showed 61% of voters in districts across Fairfax County believe a casino is a distraction from an affordability focus; and polling in February that showed opposition to the casino as a deciding factor among Democratic primary voters in their vote choice for Congressional primaries this summer.
Following the governor’s first veto since entering office in January, Freedom Virginia Co-Executive Director Ryan O’Toole released the following statement:
“Governor Spanberger has been laser-focused on making a Virginia you can afford, and today she wisely chose to veto legislation that would have been a distraction from that mission. It has been clear for years that nobody wants this except a single developer who has been trying to force an unpopular casino on Fairfax County, threatening to disrupt Virginia’s economy and ignoring the will of Virginians. With the explosion of gaming across Virginia in recent years, Governor Spanberger’s action today recognizes what we really need: a single Virginia Gaming Commission that can promote consumer protection and ensure that Virginia’s gaming industry looks out for regular people first, not predatory corporate interests. To those who have supported the casino, we hope that policymakers at the local and state levels can join us in turning their attention to more fair ways to generate revenue by closing loopholes for the billionaire class.”
