Affordable Housing
Affordable housing should be a right for all Virginians, regardless of income level. In recent years, the cost of housing has increased faster than the rate of inflation in communities across the commonwealth.
The Problem
Families are finding it more difficult than ever to keep a roof over their heads. The General Assembly needs to work together and find bipartisan solutions, and we need to allow communities the freedom to decide what pathways are best for them to increase affordable housing.
The Solution
The first-time homebuyer’s grant program would provide a $10,000 one-time, nonrefundable credit to an individual, or a couple filing jointly, who is buying a home for the first time. This bill would allow more Virginians to own a home. Hardworking families need solutions that will lower the cost of housing, not line the pockets of greedy developers and landlords who have profited off of jacking up home prices or rents. The bill failed to make it out of committee, but the General Assembly set aside funds in the 2024-2026 biennial budget to establish a first-time homebuyer’s grant program. Governor Glenn Youngkin removed the funds in his budget amendments.
Freedom Virginia is committed to lowering the cost of housing, finding bipartisan solutions to increase the housing supply, and making rents and mortgages more affordable because everyone deserves a roof over their head.
